TAGHAZOUT, MOROCCO 3-4 JULY 2023
The European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), in collaboration with the European Network of Judicial Inspection Services (RESIJ) and the Superior Council of the Judiciary of the Kingdom of Morocco, is organising the 2nd Regional Conference of the Southern Mediterranean Network of Judicial Inspection Services, created in May 2022, on 3 and 4 July in Taghazout (Morocco).
This conference brings together representatives of the General Inspectorates of Justice from countries in the southern Mediterranean region (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine* and Tunisia) and from certain European countries that are members of RESIJ (Belgium, Spain, France and Portugal). It is structured around workshops on ethics, magistrates’ personal freedom of expression, their independence and the requirements of their professional activity. Each inspectorate has the opportunity to respond in its own way to the questions presented in the form of case studies, and thus to exchange best practices for concrete situations. An internal meeting of the Network’s members will bring the 1st day to a close and provide an opportunity to decide on the Network’s future activities.
The conference was opened by Mr Mohamed Abdennabaoui, President Delegate of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary of the Kingdom of Morocco, Mr Abdellah Hammoud, Inspector General of Judicial Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco and Ms Carmen Morte Gomez, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Rabat. Ms Roxana Petcu, the new President of the European Network of Judicial Inspection Services (ENJIS), sent a pre-recorded video message.
The second day will be devoted to a review of the responses to the case studies, followed by a presentation of RESIJ’s comparative work, which could provide inspiration for the countries of the southern Mediterranean region.
This event is being organised as part of the joint programme entitled “Protecting Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Democracy through Shared Standards in the Southern Mediterranean” (South V Programme), co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the latter.
